Happy Trails Hostess

When I was growing up, smoking was still popular, as was cruising on weekends, and things like trans-fats and junk food were not yet being discussed.  During these times, which really was not that long ago, my mom would sometimes place Hostess snack cakes in my lunch pail (Hot Wheels, if I recall correctly), along with a sandwich, fruit, and milk money.

Though not always included, these delicious treats were much appreciated by the boyhood me whenever they were.  Also, for lunch trading purposes, Hostess treats could be bartered for nearly anything else that was in any lunch bag or pail at my elementary school!

My personal favorites, not in any particular order, were Cupcakes,

Zingers,

Fruit Pies (Apple actually),

and Suzy Q’s!

Years later, when I was in college and had abandoned my unhealthy, old pals, I must admit, I would occasionally still enjoy a SweetRoll, or two, when I did not have time for breakfast!

I never really cared  much for Twinkies, though I was surprised to learn they were 85 years old!

I was even more surprised to learn, like many in the U.S. recently, that Hostess was closing…

and not due to low sales either.  Indeed, when I went looking for Hostess products this morning, I was amazed to find that they had literally flown off the shelves from most local stores already!

Through tenacity I nonetheless managed to find a few packages at an out-of-the-way convenience store and brought them home to share with my kids.

Though it has been a while since I last tasted them, the memories came back as did the smiles!  In living to see the passing of Hostess, I am more than a little saddened to witness it, even though I understand why.  Thanks for the memories Hostess!

  2. Reblogged this on The ObamaCrat.Com™ and commented:
I don’t understand why Hostess is closing it’s doors after 85 plus years. The CEO says: Hostess CEO says strike was fatal blow for bankrupt company and that it is too late to fix it.

18,000 jobs are estimated to be lost. Seems to me the Board is a bit too greedy to negotiate so I say good riddance. Unions are a necessity.

  3. Saying goodbye is hard been there done that. By the way a Turkey sandwich not on Wonder Bread is no sandwich at all.

  4. I loved the cupcakes. To me, that’s the greatest treat. I never was too crazy about twinkees. If it’s not chocolate, it’s not worth it!

  5. I only really ever liked those cinnamon rolls. Other than that, I say good riddance. 🙂 Maybe America will become healthier?

  7. Would you believe I never had a Twinkie! When my girls were little, I made bread, but their favorite was the softie Wonder bread the lady across the street treated them to. Go figure.

  8. Sorry to hear of another American company brought down by greed. Unions were a good thing probably, when they were first created. Sad.

  10. My faves were the orange cupcakes, which were always hard to find. The apple pies were a close second. Rest in peace, Hostess.

  11. Why do we have the lose the best things in life over the greedy CEO’s self-serving interests? This sounds like another disaster courtesy of BAIN capitol…probably not involved directly, however, it is what they do to comp-anies like this and we have seen too, too much of it for the last few decades. More than a shame…..

    • Because union members refused to take an 8% pay cut, en-light of difficult times. Unions would rather their demands be met, than make some compromises that are best for everyone. Just remember, there are plenty of non-union bakers that would take this job for MUCH less than what the unions were paying their people.

Just remember one thing: Unions are a tax-exempt entity of the IRS, and their ‘bosses’ and ‘big wigs’ are making six-figure salaries.

  15. When I was in flight school, I had the breakfast of champions every morning. Orange Cupcakes and a coke. That was 17 years ago. Today just thinking about that I gained 5 pounds. Ha Ha.

  16. Though I don’t know Hostess (don’t live in America), I can relate to the feelings you express, and started thinking of treats from my childhood which are no longer available.

  19. You would think that interupting the prose with pictures would break up the rythm of the writing when it in fact does the opposites. It actually helps build the rythm. Very clever

  20. Cool man. I used to down the fruit pies well into college. Best calories per penny around on a tight budget. Nice job documenting all those products. I’d write more but I’m hungry, gonna grab a bag of pre-cut Broccoli and Cauliflower from my fridge and dip them in some hummus. My God what has happened to me!

  22. Dear Dr. Anthony,
Thanks for being a subscriber to my blog.
I know how you feel. It is indeed sad that Hostess is closing due to the Union. My favorite was the snowball cupcakes…chocolate cupcakes, covered in pink icing and coconut. I’m like you. I never got addicted to Twinkies.
    Good luck with your writing!

  23. I was surprised to hear that they were closing down as they’ve been so popular! Half of the stuff you blogged about above you can’t even find in Canada so it was fun to see the trip down memory lane. Thanks for sharing!
